US Government Suspends All Private Charter Flights To All Cuba Airports
USA announces suspension of private charter flights to Cuba
This measure is intended to deprive the Castro regime of income from tourism infrastructure
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Thursday that he instructed the Department of Transportation to suspend private charter flights to all airports in Cuba, including Havana.
Pompeo explained that all charter flights between the United States and Cuba under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Transport are suspended, with the exception of authorized government charter flights to and from Havana and other authorized private charter flights for urgent medical purposes, search and rescue operations and other travel in the interests of USA. The secretary added that the administration will continue with measures designed to reduce the Cuban government’s revenues from boarding fees, regime-owned hotels and other travel-related spending..
“The Cuban Armed Forces and Intelligence Services own and operate most of the hotels and other tourist infrastructure in Cuba. We encourage travelers from all countries to take this into account and make responsible travel decisions to Cuba. The suspension of private charter flights would deprive the Castro regime of economic resources and limit its ability to abuse, Pompeo added. “We made it clear to the Castro regime that the United States will continue to protect the Cuban people and oppose the regime’s abuses and intervention in Venezuela to support Maduro’s illegal rule.”.
“Unfortunately, the Castro regime did not change its repressive and undemocratic behavior. He continues to imprison journalists and pro-democratic activists, commit physical violence, support the de facto dictatorship in Venezuela, suppress freedom of religion and belief and intimidate those who tell the truth about the real situation in Cuba, “the head of the State Department stated..
