US imposed new sanctions against military leaders of the Assad regime
Sanctions are timed to coincide with the anniversary of the attack on Duma residents
The State Department announced the introduction, together with the Ministry of Finance, sanctions against 19 individuals and legal entities, in accordance with the Law on the Protection of the Civilian Population of Syria of 2019 and a number of other sanctions provisions.
“Just over five years ago, on October 30, 2015, Bashar al-Assad’s forces, with the support of Iran and Russia, killed more than 70 Syrian civilians and injured nearly 500 more in an explosion in the (city) Duma market,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement..
“In memory of the victims of the brutal attack on the Duma market and other atrocities committed by the Assad regime, the State Department is imposing sanctions against the National Defense Forces, pro-Assad formations associated with Iran, and one of their commanders, Sakra Rostoma,” the document says..
The statement states that the sanctions against the Syrian military command, members of parliament, and government structures in Syria “underline how deeply the Assad regime has corrupted Syrian institutions.”.
Sanctions were imposed, in particular, against Nabil Tume bin Mohammed, Amer Taysir Heyti and Husam bin Ahmed Rushdi al-Katirji, head of the intelligence unit of the Syrian Air Force Ghassan Ismail and head of the Syrian political security department Nasr al-Ali.
Those doing business with any of the 19 listed individuals and entities may also be subject to sanctions.
“The United States is determined to respond to the demand of the Syrian people for a political solution to the conflict in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2254. To this end, we support the call of the UN Special Envoy Pedersen for a ceasefire, the release of political prisoners and detainees, the development of a new constitution, as well as new free and fair elections under the UN control, “the US Secretary of State said in a statement..
